This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. That definitely made it a controversial release in our community. Admittedly, it would make for a much more interesting story if it was indeed an unreleased PC version of NBA Live that was somehow leaked. It fooled more than a couple of people who caught wind of its existence, and because no one would ever fake anything on the Internet — hold your laughter there at the back — they insisted it must be real.
Well, until they downloaded it and saw what it actually was, at least. Naturally, there was disappointment and anger when people realised what they had downloaded.
They probably felt that the ends justified the means. Of course, there was a problem with what they were doing. It was also deceptive. We did our best with NBA Live PC, but at the end of the day, it was the same game with new rosters and maybe some updated art. On top of that, no credit was given to the people who created the mods that were packaged with the fake NBA Live PC, nor was permission ever asked.
Eventually there was enough awareness of the ruse that people stopped asking about it, and it was generally forgotten. It just goes to show how much people wanted a PC version of NBA Live though, and how disappointed we were when we found out it was a console-only release. Even though some of us did end up getting NBA Live on console, as a community we dedicated ourselves to keeping NBA Live and other games updated for another year, so that the PC community had something new ish to play.
We made sure to keep it far away from the fake NBA Live PC however, and there was no mistaking that they were mods, not a brand new game.
NBA Live PC itself might be a bit harder to get a hold of, but there are still copies floating around on eBay and other online marketplaces.
